Be sure to notify your bank that you will be traveling so they do not block your debit card. Do the same for the credit card(s) you are bringing.
Consider obtaining a credit card that does not charge international fees such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, the Bank of America Travel Rewards card, or the Capital One Venture card.
Always pay in local currency when given the option. You will receive a better exchange rate than if you chose to pay in USD while abroad and incur fewer fees.
After landing, go to the ATM in the airport and get some local currency.

Notify your cell phone provider before you leave the country and ask for the best plan that allows international roaming without lots of extra fees.
Bring a portable battery charger for your cell phone as well as a cord and plug for charging.
All hotels will have hair dryers, but if you want to bring a flat iron or curling iron, please be sure to bring either one with a dual converter or a cordless version.
